Additional Coursework & Hands-On Training

Hands-On Training Exercises

Time at squadron meetings is limited, so most hands-on Emergency Services training for required Tasks occurs outside regular meetings.

Squadrons around the state and beyond often open their events (e.g., Search and Rescue Exercises or "SAREX") to members outside their squadrons. Keep an eye on the Skyhawk Calendar as well as the following for more opportunities to complete your training requirements:

CAP Test 117, Parts 1-3

These are available via the Axis learning system. ES Continuing Education requirements for various qualifications as detailed below. Part 1 is required for the GTM3 qualification, but it is recommended that you take all three parts.

  • Part 1 is required for all ground crew including ground team members, ground team leaders, urban direction finding team members, and critical incident stress team qualified.
  • Part 2 is required for all aircrew including mission pilots, transport mission pilots, mission scanners, mission observers, flight line marshallers, and flight line supervisors.
  • Part 3 is required for all mission base staff including mission radio operators, mission staff assistants, branch directors, section chiefs, and incident commanders.

Basic First Aid

Any standardized first aid course from a reputable organization such as the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or other organization that provides a certificate of training will suffice. (See CAPR 60-3 for details.) Medical training in Civil Air Patrol is for treating minor injuries such as scrapes and cuts one may get while walking through the woods. We are not an emergency medical service and only treat what we train to treat. Nonetheless, this training is required to become a Ground Team Member.

Submit your certificate through the SQTR system.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Training

These are online courses that are not part of the Civil Air Patrol system.
You will need to create a separate account to complete these. It is recommended that you use the same email address as you use for CAP purposes. You will get an email with your FEMA Student ID (FEMASID), which you will need when taking classes.

IS-100 and IS-700 are required for GTM qualifications.

FEMA IS-100: Introduction to the Incident Command System

The FEMA IS-100 online course and exam is an introduction to the Incident Command System under which CAP and other local, state, and federal emergency service agencies operate. Much of information covered in the FEMA IS-100 exam may be found in CAP Regulation 60-3, Chapter 8; however, the FEMA web site contains an excellent self paced study course and online exam.

Once you have completed this training, save the completion certificate and send it to the squadron Emergency Services Officer who will need it to verify completion in eServices. Also enter the information into eServices as follows:

  1. Login to eServices.
  2. Go to Menu-->Operations-->Operations Qualifications.
  3. Select Ops Quals-->Communications-->Qualification Entry.
  4. Enter your CAPID or name to bring up your record.
  5. In the *Functional Area Required dropdown menu, select OPS-Emergency Services.
    In the *Achievement dropdown menu, select IS100 – IS-100.
  6. Fill in the completion date and certificate number, check the box at the top of the data entry form, and submit using the button at the bottom of the page.

FEMA IS-700: An Introduction to the National Incident Management System

The FEMA IS-700 online course provides an overview of the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
Follow the steps above (FEMA IS-100) to get credit for your work.

Additional FEMA Courses

Once you have completed the above courses (required for GTM3), you should be able to find your way around the FEMA training website and complete credentials for the qualifications you need.
